Youth of the Year. The Glenside Lions again supported the Lions Youth of the Year Quest in 2008 and selected three finalists from Glenunga International High School. The final judging was held at a Partners Night dinner at the Mount Osmond Golf Club and the winner, for the second year running, was Callum Deakin, (who again also won the public speaking section) - and as a result won a $50 book voucher. The Glenunga International High School has received a $250 book voucher. Judges this year were Di Schluter, Educator,; Tim Ganguly, Medical Student and past Youth of the Year Club winner and State Finalist; and representing the Youth of the Year sponsors, National Australia Bank, was Jodie Kinloch. Each of the finalists are to be congratulated for exceptional performances and for the research and presentation of their material. Well done everyone and thanks to our judges for their fine effort.

Lion Terry Yuen was instrumental in the setting up of the Lions East Timor dental project in 2001. The Lions Club of Glenside donated $5,000 in 2005 to the project to enable this valuable work to continue. Terry, a dentist at Glenside, set up the Clinic within a community clinic in Dili with mobile dental equipment thus enabling an outreach program to outlying villages to operate. The work performed includes oral health promotion, extractions, fillings and scaling and volunteer Australian dentists visit the clinic four times a year to teach, mentor and treat patients. An East Timorese dental nurse, Domingos Maia, is employed indirectly to man the clinic. At the Burnside 2007 Australia Day awards ceremony, Terry was honored for his outstanding work and dedication to the East Timor project with the prestigious Community Service Award.

The Lions Club of Glenside has provided $16,180 to Autism SA for the establishment of several new assistance programs for young Autistic females. As male patients dominate, resources have been largely directed to them and this money will help to address that imbalance.

A very large consignment of books have been packaged by our wonderful volunteers and sent to a school in China . This is the second such consignment that we have sent, thus helping the students with their English and general studies.

The Club bannerette has been completely updated. As a result of some research into the history of Glenside (see history page of this web-site), a totally new design has been adopted. A gum tree, wetlands and the sun are depicted as symbols of our past. As a visiting Lion, you may well be the recipient of a bannerette to take back to your own Club!

President for 2009 is Danny Watson with Alan Hook continuing with the Secretarial responsibilities. John Hillman was President for the past year and is now Immediate Past President.
